Very little is known about the Hadean Eon (4576.2 - 4000 million years ago).

It was the time when Earth was being bombarded with comets, planetoids, asteroids and meteoroids. It was a time called the great bombardment. Evidence for this comes from the moon since most of the craters on Earth have been destroyed by erosion, plate tectonics and alluvial deposits. During this phase in Earths history life just simply would could not have happened. For a lot of the time the surface was molten due to the constant impacts and there were no oceans.

It was thought that the Great Bombardment ended about 4,100 million years ago. After this came the Great Rain, a period where it rained constantly for millions of years. This was to form the first oceans.

It was after this about 3,500 million years ago when the first evidence of life appeared. Since the fossil life we have found was already quite sophisticated scientist believe that life must have appeared before this but it is still very unlikely this was during the Hadean Eon.

What is the longest Eon in the Geologic Timescale?

The oldest eon of geologic time is the Archaean Eon of the Precambrian period. The oldest rocks and fossils date from this time, about 3.8 to 2.5 billion years ago. (Prior to that, the Hadean Eon began with the formation of the Earth. No geologic record exists from the Hadean, during which the Earth cooled from its molten state.)

What is an eon?

In general speech, an eon can refer to a very long period of time. In science, an eon is the largest division in the geologic time scale. An eon is subdivided into two or more eras and lasts around a billion years or so. In Earth's history there are four eons in total: Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic. We are currently in the Phanerozoic Eon.

When did the proterozoic era start and end?

it began at the start of the hadean eon after the chaotian and prechaotian eons

What geologic period lasted for almost 7 8ths of earth's history?

The geological division that lasted for just over 7/8ths of the Earth's history is the Precambrian Super-Eon. It started 4576.2 million years ago with the formation of Earth and ended 542 million years ago at the start of the Cambrian Period. It is made up of the Hadean, Archean and Proterozoic Eons. Although the super-eon is widely recognised as a time division this is only an unofficial term. The ICS prefer to use the Eon when describing the time before the Cambrian.

What is the longest division of geologic time?

The oldest division of geologic time is the Precambrian, specifically the Archaean Eon from which the oldest rocks and fossils date. (The Hadean Eon preceded the Archaean, but no geologic records date from this time because the Earth was cooling from a molten state.)

What was the era with no lifeforms on Earth?

The Hadean Eon, the earliest time interval, was when the Earth was cooling, and continents and oceans formed. Lifeforms are thought to have appeared in the following eon, the Archean Eon.(eras are a much smaller time interval, and the Hadean is not normally subdivided into these)

When did the first living organism appear?

During the Archaean Eon

How long did the Precambrain last?

Precambrian is an informal term for the time before the Cambrian Period, the first period of the Phanerozoic Eon. The Precambrian consists of three eons, the Hadean, the Archean, and the Proterozoic. The Hadean Eon is about 760,000,000 years long. The Archean Eon is about 1,300,000,000 years long. The Proterozoic Eon is about 1,960,000,000 years long This comes to a total of 4,025,000,000 years.

How long hadean era last?

The Hadean Eon lasted from Earths formation about 4.5762 billion years ago until 4 billion years ago, some 576.2 million years.

How long did the hadean eon last?

It started about 4.6 billion years ago, and ended about 3.8 billion years ago.

In science how long is an eon?

An eon is a made up of two or more eras. They are defined in terms of what was happening on the planet in biological and geological terms rather than in number of years. We are now 541 million yeras (Myr) into the current eon - the Phanerozoic eon. Before that was the Proterozoic eon which lasted 1959 Myr, the Archean eon (1500 Myr) and the oldest, the Hadean eon (500 Myr).
