The First Lady was thought of as FDR's alter ego. She became his legs and eyes. She traveled throughout the country visiting squalid tenements in the cities, the rural towns of the Appalachian hollows, and the murky coal mines to see how "the other half" was surviving. She was compassionate and deeply moved by the plight of the "forgotten poor" of our society. She helped the President form bills and urged him to appoint more women to governmental posts. She was a leading supporter of organized labor and she was very involved in the civil rights of minorities. She made the grievances of Black Americans a major part of her plan to help solve the problems of the Depression.
