Then any computer that is turned on - while the DHCP server is down - can't get an IP address, and therefore can't communicate on the network. Also, a DHCP lease may expire - the computer got the IP address for 24 hours, for example, and the time elapses. Same problem.

Which circumstances are APIPA addresses assigned?

According to Microsoft:How to use automatic TCP/IP addressing without a DHCP server"A Windows-based computer that is configured to use DHCP can automatically assign itself an Internet Protocol (IP) address if a DHCP server is not available. For example, this could occur on a network without a DHCP server, or on a network if a DHCP server is temporarily down for maintenance."For more information, see Related Links, below.

How do you find your DHCP?

1. Click "Start" button located in the left lower corner of your screen. 2. n Windows XP, click "Run," and type "cmd" followed by pressing "Enter." In Windows Vista, type "cmd" and press "Enter." The command prompt window with the black background should appear. 3. Type "ipconfig/all" in the command prompt and press "Enter." 4. Scroll down the program output and find a line that starts with "DHCP Server." This line contains an IP address of the DHCP Server. For example, " DHCP Server . . . :193.165.1.1 "

What is the dhcpnack and when do you get one name 2 scenarios?

Recently I saw a lot of queries regarding when the Microsoft DHCP server issues a NAK to DHCP clients. For simplification purposes, I am listing down the possible scenarios in which the server should NOT issue a NAK. This should give you a good understanding of DHCP NAK behavior. When a DHCP server receives a DHCPRequest with a previously assigned address specified, it first checks to see if it came from the local segment by checking the GIADDR field. If it originated from the local segment, the DHCP server compares the requested address to the IP address and subnet mask belonging to the local interface that received the request.DHCP server will issue a NAK to the client ONLY IF it is sure that the client, "on the local subnet", is asking for an address that doesn't exist on that subnet. The server will send a NAK EXCEPT in the following scenarios:-1. Requested address from possibly the same subnet but not in the address pool of the server:-This can be the failover scenario in which 2 DHCP servers are serving the same subnet so that when one goes down, the other should not NAK to clients which got an IP from the first server.2. Requested address on a different subnet:-If the Address is from the same superscope to which the subnet belongs, DHCP server will ACK the REQUEST.The DHCPNACK or Negative Acknowledgment is a packet that the server sends if the IP address is not available in stand of DHCPACK (in use on other client for example) or the address is no longer valid. In case of DHCPNACK the client must restart the lease process in order to get an IP address.

What if you lost your LAN settings?

Settings on a LAN are not stored in any one place; for disaster recovery planning any configuration information should be written down. Most settings for devices on a LAN come from the DHCP server, so backing up that server would preserve most of the typical LAN settings.

Why does Pokemon mystery universe say the server is up but in your computer it says the server is down?

Not sure where it says that exactly, but sometimes the server has problems when so many people access it. Usually you can tell its offline at the log in page when it says: "Still receiving news."

What is the difference between a static IP address and a floating IP address?

Static IP always remains the same if you shut the computer down and restart. The floating IP (or the one assigned by DHCP), changes sometimes on a daily or hourly basis, mostly depending on if you shut your computer down and restart it. During the time your computer is (offline), the DHCP server can assign that former IP to a unit that was just booted up. In that case you would be assigned a new IP when you booted up.

I have a mac and am unable to connect to Google yahoo youtube.com and many other sites did i get a virus or what happened?

It is always possible. However, you don't give enough information to say for certain that it was caused by a virus. It could be the result of incorrectly configuring a network card, a DHCP server that is down, etc.

Can you get to the internet if DHCP is down?

Yes, you can. Connect your computer to the modem. Or, you can configure your NIC card with a static address and not depend (temporarily) on DHCP. Just be careful, because choosing a static address can be duplicated elsewhere on a network.
