Basically Ajax (JavaScript HTTPRequest()) allows the page to send and receive data asynchronously from the server. This means the page does not need to refresh.
This type of javascript work is commonly used along side a server-side language such as PHP, ASP, ColdFusion etc...
Facebook on a basic level, retrieves your data from a database, sorts it out, and the javascript injects it into the browser.
