Solon made several reforms when he came into power in approximately 600 BCE. He improved the conditions of debt-ridden farmers, he put decreased indentured servitude and included the middle class into the government.
He ended debt slavery, and brought home as many as he could find who had been sold abroad.
He established an official class system to define the privileges and responsibilities in governance of the state, rather than the power blocs of the privileged top class which caused disruption amongst the citizenry.
Solon cancelled all debts, outlawed all new loans based on human collateral, freed all people who had fallen into slavery for not being able to pay off loan debts.
He ended debt slavery, and arranged a more equitable division between the upper and lower classes.
