He was born into a German, Lutheran, Family--The House of Wettin. He was a "German Prince". However at the time Albert was born Germany was not the Germany that currently exists today, it was a geographic region which contained dozens of small states who's inhabitants identified themselves as ethnically similar to one another.

Of course Albert, to marry into the British Royal Family had to convert to Anglicanism (The Church of England)
