Depending on the breed and disposition of your dog, you need enough space to give your dog adequate exercise. One of the worst things you can do is to take a very active breed and try to make it a lap dog or an apartment dog with little or no way to expend energy. Dogs that need a lot of activity for good health really NEED the activity; it is cruel to try to train a dog out of that; it cannot be done.
Make sure you have room where you live to accomodate a dog. The space required will also depend on the breed of dog you get. Having a garden helps, if not you just have to take the dog for regular walks. The equipement you need will be things like a bed for the dog, a lead for walking, a collar, dog bowls (one for food and one for water), and there are also lots of additional things some people like to get for their dogs. You'll also need to stock up on dog food and make sure there is always water available. Dogs also require regular worming etc so you'll have to buy those from time to time.
