The pope's main role is being the successor to the Apostle Peter whose mission was given to him by Christ. After Christ's Resurrection, when He and a few of His disciples (Peter among them) was eating breakfast of fish and bread on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asked Peter 3 times if Peter loved Him and each time when Peter said "yes" Jesus gave him the command to feed the sheep and take care of them. (See John 21:15-19 in any Christian Bible). This command by Christ to Peter was that when Jesus returned to Heaven (His Ascension), it would be Peter's mission to lead Christ's Church. The sheep are members of Christ's flock, the people, and the popes who is/are Peter's successors continue that mission given to Peter to lead the Church until Christ returns during the End Times.

The Pope has many roles, mainly to be a priest and a pastor to all Catholics. We need a pope to continue the Apostle Peter's mission but also to keep the Church on the right path set forth by Christ and to keep all heresy and other sins out of the Church that would soil the Word of God.

This is a basic overview of having a pope. If you would like to learn more just go to any Catholic websites to learn more about the pope, his roles/duties, and so forth.
