Basically t is that you can not bring religion forcefully onto someone in public. For instance, you can pray outdoors or even preach outdoors because people can get up and walk out, but it is illegal for teachers to start 'preaching' and talking about religion, hinting about which religion is right. This is because students are not given the ability to get up and walk out. Establishment Clause.

What sets up the seperation between church and state?

There is no direct reference in the constitution that states there is a separation of church and state. Yet, when it was written the founding fathers had all experienced life under a king and a state religion. This is why the second amendment was written because the freedom to worship as they pleased was a necessary freedom. Jefferson wrote extensively about the importance of separation of church and state and how important it was to maintain a secular state. This preserves the freedom of religion for all.
