Alert the proper fire authorities, the persons resident or working in the area, and the local management if in an apartment or office building. Use any building fire alarms that are present.

Unless you are qualified, and unless it is very small, do not try to extinguish the fire yourself. You may try to determine the type of fire and its possible cause, but otherwise simply alert those nearby, leave the immediate vicinity of the fire, and move to a safe area. Remaining in a fire area could result in serious or fatal injury, especially from smoke inhalation and structure collapse.

You should attempt to roll on the floor trying to smother the flames, or if you are near a body of water jump in. If it is only an outer layer of clothing that has caught fire remove as fast as possible. If the clothing is in direct contact with your skin and has been put out, DO NOT remove, as you may remove skin as well. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
