The land for the District of Columbia, in which the City of Washington was located, came from the State of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The portion south of the Potomac River was returned to Virginia relatively early, becasue of the inconvenience of crossing the river and the belief at the time that neither the City nor the District would have need of that land.
