On the First of February 1960, four black students walked into the Woolworths shopping centre in Greensboro, North Carolina intent on going to the white only bar in protest to segregated bars, restaurants and cafes. Quickly this protest caught on and all across the country black people began participating in things known as 'Sit Ins' where by the black Americans would occupy all the seats in the restaurant and take it in turns to make sure that no white person was able to sit down in that seat. This was very effective in publicising the issues of racism.
