Best Answer

carbon dioxide and water

if there is not enough oxygen in the air when it burns, then it is called incomplete combustion. a colourless, odourless, poisonous gas carbon monoxide can be formed, as well as the much more common carbon (soot)

With a match or lighter, we supply the heat necessary to initiate the chemical reactions that will sustain the flame. The wax (paraffin) melts in the presence of the heat, is wicked up to the flame, and is burned. Combustion occurs as the chain hydrocarbons of the wax break down in the presence of oxygen in air, and we see the formation of (idealy) carbon dioxide and water.

Burning candle wax (paraffin) produces gases. To understand what substances are present, let's look at what's going on. First, we light the candle, and our match or lighter supplies the heat to initiate the chemical reactions that will become self-sustaining when the flame forms.

The liquid wax is a hydrocarbon, and it's melted by the heat of the continuing chemical reactions in the combustion process. This liquid wax chemically breaks down and (idealy) forms carbon dioxide gas, and water. The water is also a gas at the heat of formation prevents it from appearing as a liquid.

Wax itself is the candle fuel. The heat from the candle melt and vaporized the wax to fuel gas and move up to combustion zone.

Experiment to try: do it under adult supervision.

Heat the wax with insulated handle spoon until melt and small bubble start to form then ignite it. You will observe that wax can burn. Wax temperature for auto combustion is around 200 C. The temperature is awful high so it provided with wick to start the fire.

Candle wax is made out of paraffin. The burning of the paraffin fuel keeps the candle wick flame alight for a long period.
