There are many symbolisms in the book. One of the most obvious ones are:

- the old bus represents a death, old, dark place, maybe even a grave

-fire it releases Chappie from his old life and gives him a chance to start a new life

-zombie - is one of the choices what Chappie can become- represents old shadow of Chappie, he can't be his old self fully because he's "dead", but he doesn't start new life either

-bone - is second choice Chappie has - it represents new life, after chappie has shed off his old self, the flesh.

-the bridge is the bottom of the pit that he hits and starts to climb up, starts a new life- there he realizes that he doesn't want to die

-the gun - in the beginning it's a symbol of power and courage, but later it's the symbol of evilness, something he needs to get rid of to start a new life.

And, there are many more in the book.
