The most prominent systematic risk to London Stock Exchange was the near total collapse of the global economy in 2008. This was caused largely by toxic debts brought about through the sub prime mortgage in US. In London, it brought down the European HQ of Lehman Brothers which was forced to go bankrupt as the investment bank found difficult to manage its over $500b of debts. The events of 2008 really shook down the markets at LSE and it needs to be stated the dusts have not really settled on this as the Govt. has been forced to implement harsh austerity measures to cut down the deficits in order to get the economy back on tracks.
Prior to the foregoing, the events of terrorist attacks on July 7, 2007 also had a knock on effects on the markets at LSE as the unexpected events panicked markets. It is worth noted that markets had hardly got out of that before the bigger punch of 2008 meltdown.
