The first thing you need to do determine what has made the light come on, then you must fix the problem. It could possibly be an O2 or OXYGEN sensor- a majority of the emission or check engine lights are from sensors or the EGR or Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve, or something as simple as a cracked or disconnected vacuum hose in the emissions system, especially at the EGR Valve vacuum hose connector stem. In many cases, the car may still run smooth and show no signs of a problem other then the light being on. The best way to find out the cause, is to have a mechanic or auto parts store plug a diagnostic scanner/code reader into your cars diagnostic connector link to see what is making the light come on. Many of the larger auto parts chain stores will do this for customers at no charge.
