Ferrets needs not only extra protein, but extra calories to nourish herself and the kits before and after delivery. Need 2 or 3 times more water than usual, and they will drink much more from a dish than a water bottle. A ferret that does not drink enough will not eat enough, and her milk supply will fail.
The Jill must be fed very well during her pregnancy and should be provided with a high quality protein (35%) diet, with sufficient fats (18% including 7% - 15% linoleic acid) and carbohydrates with a minimal grain or fiber for her needs. Nursing jills must eat and drink two or three times as much as usual for her and the kits nourishment. Supplement a nursing Jill's diet with high calorie nutritional supplements (Nutrical) and moist food 1 or 2 times a day to increase her food and fluid intake and stimulate milk production. Offer kits wet food at about 3 weeks to take the burden off the Jill
What to feed a sick ferret?
Sick ferret can dehydrate very easily. You can feed it what ferret owners call "Duck soup" it is a mixture of food and nutrition supplements for nursing sick ferrets back to health and putting weight on underweight ferrets is frequently necessary. When ferret are ill, they will not eat, and it may be necessary to force feed them. There are several variations on the original recipe. Duck Soup was named after a ferret called "Lucki Duck" and was nursed back to health by it's owner. Ferrets will not recognize it as food, so introduce them to it before they become ill. To introduce them smear some on their lips to get them to lick it off. You will probably have to repeat the process until they learn to recognize it as food. The secret is not to give up, there may a time when your ferret is either sick or had surgery and Duck Soup is what will keep them going.
