As a teenager, Lex Luthor invented a kryptonite antidote to cure Superboy of kryptonite poisoning, but he had an accident in his lab and caused fumes to escape. Superboy used his super breath to extinguish them, but it destroyed his lab and blew the gas fumes at him, causing his hair to fall out. Lex Luthor accused Superboy of being jealous of his genius, and vowed to destroy him ever since.
