Only the American black bear lives in California. The grizzly has been extinct in that state for a number of years.
Records have said that there used to be grizzly bears in yosemite a long time ago, until they were extincted and hunted out in the 1870s by western pioneers looking for gold.

Black Bears
Bears can survive in almost any natural setting, including the forests of Yosemite. They can also travel to within a dozen meters of humans without being detected. Thus, Yosemite bears have had no problem getting to campgrounds in Yosemite, or anywhere else. Any place that bears have learned that easy food is available, they'll go there, until they are "taught" that the danger of entering a place is not worth the chance for food.
Black bears are probably located all over this national park.

Yosemite boundaries may be indicated by small signs. There is no fence surrounding Yosemite from the bordering lands, many of which are also protected.
