He resigned in 1974 after the Watergate Scandal. After the resignation he left politics, and suffered a severe illness the following year. He later began writing books and memoirs, travelling the world and gradually winning back respect of the American public. He died in 1994 of a stroke.

Soon after he left office, his successor, Gerald Ford, pardoned him of all his White House offenses. His only real punishment was to lose his office and the disgrace associated with his reasons for resigning. He may also have cost the Republicans the next election.
