Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler was the first African-American woman to become a physician in the US, born 8 February 1831 in Christiana, Delaware, to Matilda Webber and Absolum Davis. She was raised by a kind aunt in Pennsylvania who also provided care for infirm neighbors.
