German forces led by Hitler began overtaking countries nearby, expanding their armed forces and generally breaking the Treaty of Versailles on all levels that had been signed to end WWI. Part of their motivation was to get rid of Communist rule, another to recover at least somewhat from the Depression, but mostly it was greed that motivated Hitler and his followers which set off the events of WWII.

The same thing most if not all wars are fought for. Conquest and to improve their economy. Governments can talk all they want to about freedom, democracy, freeing the oppressed or any other lofty goal, but bottom line, it is the pocketbook that fuels or motivates most wars.

Hitler wanted to avenge Germany's defeat in the First World War and he also thought that peace was absurd so he allied with Japan and Italy and formed the Axis group.
