Christians believe that the mission of Jesus was to bring people to God and, through belief in him, ensure their salvation and a place in heaven. The New Testament says that Jesus taught some great moral values, but many Christians believe that salvation is by belief alone, and that good works are not necessary for salvation. On that view, the mission of Jesus was simply to be, so that people would believe that he was the Son of God.
The gospels say that Jesus was the earthly son of Mary and Joseph, born in Bethlehem, near Jerusalem, and raised in Nazareth in Galilee. Matthew says that Joseph was the son of Jacob, while Luke says that Joseph was the son of Heli. In both cases, he traces his ancestry back through his paternal line to King David.
