Best Answer

John Paul Jones is very famous for many quotes including "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way;" I may sink, but I'll be damned if I strike!;" " Where men of fine feeling are concerned there is seldom misunderstanding;" but he is most noted for "I have not yet begun to fight!". The last quote was in response to (Captain Richard Pearson of the Royal Navy ship HMS Serapis) as to whether he was surrendering his ship during the battle of Flamborough Head, (23 September 1779). His First Lieutenant Richard Dale recalls this quote to author John Henry Sherburne in the book "The Life and Character of John Paul Jones, a Captain in the United States Navy" (1825).
