It was the first big battle in the West.

Grant was trying to drive the Confederates out of Western Tennessee, and they were trying to hold on to the rail junction at Corinth.

Unaware of any Confederates in the area, Grant told his men to rest easy at Pittsburgh Landing, beside the Tennessee river. They were taken completely by surprise when the enemy attacked, and would probably have been pushed into the river, if the operation had not been suspended for the night.

Next morning, it was resumed, but Grant's troops had rallied, helped by reinforcements from the East, and the Confederate commander, Sidney Johnston, was killed.

The Confederates retreated and abandoned Corinth, and Grant gained much credibility from the action.
