There were many wars in the history of ancient Rome. In the last 64 years of the Roman Republic there were 12 civil wars. There was bitter conflict between political factions and the government lost control over powerful men. There were civil wars during the period of rule by emperors as well. In 69 A there was a civil war between two contenders to the imperial title. In 193-97 there was a power struggle between three contenders. In the third century there were was half a century of civil wars which were, again, power struggles over the imperial title or usurpations in areas of the empire. Constantine the Great brought an end to a brief co-eperorship by winning two civil wars (in 313 and 314-324) and became the sole emperor. In 340 and 350-51 there were wars between two of Constantine the Great and against a usurper..
