The flying Scotsman is an express passenger train between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh. Since it's inception in 1862 (originally terminating in Glasgow) there have been many different types of engine pulling the express; currently an Intercity 225.
The most famous engine, and bearing the name, was the LNER A3 pacific class class No 4472 (formerly a A1 class numbered 1472) steam train. It was built in Doncaster in 1923 to a HN Gresley design.

The actual train named the Flying Scotsman, and not necessarily hauled by the similarly named loco ran between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley in Scotland.In fact, the train was mainly pulled by the A4 streamliners, like Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley,after they were introduced in the mid 1930's.
