As a young man, Jackson spent a lot a time fighting Indians. The Indians were the natural enemy of the white settlers. Surprise attacks were often made on settlers, houses were burned and whole families were murdered. Travelers were robbed and murdered. So, the settlers would retaliate and burn the nearest Indian village. It was a perpetual war time situation until the settlers finally won and drove the Indians out.
