After the biggest Artillery barrage in history, the British and Empire troops went over the top on July 1st, 1916 on a very wide front and advanced on the devastated German lines at walking pace. The Germans had quickly recovered however and reactivated the machine guns. 60,000 allied trrops were killed or wounded before breakfast. Whole regiments were vitually wiped out. The battle continued for four months with huge loss of life on both sides. The new "tanks" were used for the first time.
