The Battle of Gettysburg
Battle of Antietam
This was yet another in a chain of decisive victories for Lee, which brought the British close to granting official recognition to the Confederacy and sending miitary aid. It gave Lee the confidence to plan an invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, which failed, and caused the British to suspend their plans for recognition.
Many people in the Confederacy expected certain European nations to recognize its new government. The main reason was that the South was a main source of cotton for England as example. At various times during the US Civil War, England came close to recognizing the Confederacy as an independent nation. As it turned out, Confederate battle losses combined with its institution of slavery caused them to defer on official recognition. With that said, the French and British continued to trade with the South. What Confederate leaders failed to take into consideration was that some Europeans were less inclined to offer official recognition to the South because they did not wish to be seen as victims of Southern extortion. This pertained to a minority of European leaders.

First, it checked Lee's run of victories, and caused the British to drop their immediate plans to grant recognition to the Confederacy. Second, it gave Lincoln the credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which would deter free nations abroad from aiding the Confederates, because it would make them look pro-slavery themselves.
When 1862 is summarized, the Confederacy was seriously damaged. Despite some progress in the war, the South sustained more than 100,000 battle casualties. And, large pieces of Southern territory was lost to the Union.
The bombing of Fort Sumter caused the battle!
This Northern win, following a string of Confederate victories, caused the British to lose interest in granting recognition to the Confederacy and sending military aid. It also gave Lincoln the credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation without it sounding like a desperate measure.
