Computers in the 40's were used to perform calculations for the military of the country that developed it. The Z3 in Germany was the first such computer, with the American Harvard-IBM MARK I and ENIAC, along with the English Colossus coming soon after that.

  • The "Enigma code" was broken using a primitive computer called a Bomba.
  • The "Fish codes" were broken using Colossus, the only operating vacuum tube computer at the time.
  • Harvard Mark I used by the US Navy for many computations, it was general purpose. Also used to solve a difficult system of partial differential equations for Los Alamos.
  • Zuse Z3 in Germany, but it was destroyed in a bombing raid before it could see real use.
  • Los Alamos used an improvised computer composed of IBM punchcard unit record machines to model their nuclear bomb designs.
  • Many mechanical analog computers were used for various purposes (e.g. Norden Bombsight, submarine torpedo targeting computer, autopilot, RADAR antiaircraft computer)
  • etc.

Yes, the Collossus was the first ever computer, and was used by the British codebreakers to crack codes used by the Germans. After the war, Collossus was dismantled and its existence was kept secret for many decades. There has been a recent project to reconstruct it at Bletchley Park, a mansion in Milton Keynes where the codebreakers were based.

  • Harvard Mark I was a fully programmable digital electromechanical computer that was operated throughout the war by the US Navy at Harvard.
  • Many mechanical analog computers, such as the Norden Bombsight, were in use.
  • Cryptanalytic computers, such as the Bomba and Colossus, cracked cyphers.
  • Zuse Z3 was a fully programmable digital floating-point electromechanical computer built in Germany but destroyed in a bombing raid before it could see real use.

Digital Computers were not built during world war two. They were analog computers and other types for code encryption. Computers were in their fetal state during WW2 just as radar, sonar, and a thousand other new inventions as a result of World War 2. See links below. Digital Computers became a reality in the 1980's in a small way.

Mostly for radar and improving technologies. The Radar was discovered with a test, when a plane flew over and made the reaction. This gave British scientists the idea of radar.
