As President, James Madison reportedly erred greatly by deciding to retain the controversially scandalous and incompetent major general James Wilkinson (for political reasons!) at the beginning of the War of 1812. After the defeats of two campaigns in the St. Lawrence theater, Wilkinson was relieved of duty. After his death, this most despicable man was found to have been an agent (Agent 13) of the Spanish Crown.
His Inaugural Address indicated a paternalistic attitude toward the Native American Indians, and he even ordered the US Army to protect their lands from the ever-intrusive settlers. After the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, they were pushed off of their lands, and by 1815, the American Indians' rights their lands in the Northwest Territory were essentially gone.
