Why did they break congress into two houses?

The convention split Congress into two houses, bicameral, in a compromise to please both those who favored state power independent of size and state power according to population. Due to this, a state is granted seats in the H. R. according to the most recent census whereas each state has two senators. This compromise was perhaps what made the US Constitution able to be ratified in some states. Another advantage of a bicameral legislative branch is that each house checks one another.

How did the Great Compromise solve the differences between the large and small states?

The Compromise called for Congress to consist of two houses instead of just one. One would give each state the same number of votes (Senate) the other would have votes determined by population. This tended to even out the voting strengths between the large and small states so that the larger states would not be able to impose their interests on the small states.
