In the Presidential election of 1800, the Electoral College voting produced a "tie vote" between Jefferson and his Democratic-Republican running mate Aaron Burr (separate ballots for Vice President had not yet been mandated -- at the time, the candidate with the second highest number of Electoral votesbecame Vice President).
