The first transcontinental railroad built by the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific was officially completed on May 10, 1869. It was on that date that the gold spike was driven at Promontory, Utah.
The Union Pacific Railroad and The Central Pacific Railroad Companies were formed to build the railroad. Many of the CPR workers working east from California were Chinese-Americans and many of the UPR workers building west from Nebraska were Irish immigrants.
Talk of a transcontinental railroad started in 1830, shortly after steam powered railroads were invented in Great Britain and began to be introduced into the United States.
