Hard to say. About half the Japanese submarines participated in some way or another in the attack, though the majority were involved in screening the Japanese fleet. There were a number of mini-submarines that were to penetrate the harbor and fire two torpedoes. All of them were sunk or went aground: It was probabl I-22 or I-18 that where found and sunk first. I-16 was never found may have fired at the St. Louis though there is some belief that it actually got into the harbor and torpedoed the WV and OK. I-22 the USS Monashan (DD-354) sank it inside the harbor I-18 the USS Ward (DD-139) sank it outside I-20 experienced a mechanical failure outside of the harbor I-24 was captured after it ran aground outside of the harbor Since the attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise air attack and everyone on the ground was racing around to fight back it's highly doubtful one would know what submarine was the first to attack considering it would have probably been quite a ways off shore and submerged.

Early in the morning of the attack what did the USS Ward see near the entrance to Pearl Harbor?

A Japanese midget submarine trying to sneak into Pearl Harbor, behind the US Navy Suppy ship 'Antares'. Actually the crew of the 'Antares' first spotted the submarine's periscope and signalled the US destroyer USS Ward. The USS Ward sank the midget (or mini-) submarine at 0635 hours, 7 December 1941 (local time).

Which US ship made first contact with the Japanese in the pearl harbor attack?

A destroyer, the USS Ward, DD 139, was on patrol outside the harbor entrance and spotted the periscope of a submarine attempting to follow a US vessel in, through the torpedo nets across the mouth of the harbor, which had been opened to allow the US vessel to enter. The Ward promptly attacked this submarine with depth charges and apparently sank it. It was likely one of five Japanese "midget" submarines participating in the attack. This was about an hour and a half before the first Japanese planes appeared overhead. The Ward immediately reported the contact to authorities on shore, who ignored it and took no action whatsoever.

What were the early warning signs surrounding the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan?

There were a number of instances right before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. If noticed and followed up with, part of the damage at Pearl Harbor may have been less than it was. Here are some examples of clues that led to Japan's attack:* An intercepted Japanese telephone message gave pause, as it contained questions about the weather conditions in Hawaii and other suspicious items. At this time, the Japanese fleet was 500 miles away from Hawaii. US General Short was informed of this and decided to "sleep on it". He was not sure what the telephone call meant;* In the early hours of the morning, when the Japanese fleet was 275 miles away, the US minesweeper, the USS Condor spotted a periscope outside of the mouth of Pearl Harbor. The USS destroyer Ward was notified but found no trace of a submarine. Bottom line, nothing was done to truly confirm the sighting. It of course was a Japanese submarine in the wrong place;* Several hours later the USS Ward spotted the conning tower of a submarine. The USS Ward dropped depth charges on it and sunk the submarine. There a fear that the Ward had sunk a US submarine. At this time the first Japanese warplanes, 230 miles away from Hawaii were taking off; and* When Japanese warplanes were 137 miles away from Pearl Harbor, US radar picked up a mass of blips. There were so many, radar operators believed their radar was faulty. later on they were thought to be US planes. A bad mistake.

How was Japan able to bomb Pearl Harbor so easily?

Japan was able to do this so easily because the message of war came after the attack, so it was a sneak attack. Although, a Japanese sub was spotted outside the harbor and another one was sunken.
