The CDP-101 was released by Sony Oct 1st, 1982 for $900. It took a while to catch on with the public. It was a music-only standard.

Although I know only hearsay, Chadwyck-Healey lays claim to be the first to use CD-ROM in 1992. You can read about this in the book Stability and Change in High Tech Enterprises, by Neil Costello.

Chadwyck-Healey is known for innovation in publishing and the English Poetry Full-Text Database. Today they are a brand of ProQuest.
