* Artificial Earth satellite Sputnik 1
The first successful satellite launched by the Russians (The Soviet Union at the time) was Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. It was released during the Cold War and it caused a space race between the Americans and the Soviet Union. Apart from being the first satellite to be launched into space, it also helped us to better understand the upper atmosphere, including the radiation belts and the ionosphere. It traveled 18000 miles per hour so it only took about 92 minutes to travel around the Earth.
