In April of 1981, US astronauts Crippen and Young returned to earth in the space shuttle Columbia which used wings to get them home, but the Columbia and all other space shuttles were launched with rocket power. A winged orbital spacecraft to take off and land by itself was canceled because it was too expensive, but it may someday happen.
