The first one I knew of was Grex. It operated via telnet and used pine. It was hideously slow, using a 33 then 56k modem. Hotmail, which started a year or two later now claims the title. Sometimes claiming "first free web-based service" which is correct, sometimes not. It was bought out by Microsoft later on.

At Orangedox we’ve used the service Full Contact to lookup details on people who’ve viewed documents, like their image, full name and place of work. The service did previously have a free tier but I believe that has been removed.
