Like most of the other southern colonies, it was settled by land-hungry men and women. The colony staggered along for 20 years not really making any successful gains as the other colonies.

In 1752, Oglethorpe ask the king to take over. Under royal control the colony changed rapidly. Slaves were imported, and cotton and rice plantations were established. And Georgia prospered.
