Under the actual arena floor and the seating was an elaborate system of tunnels, holding cells for men and animals and elevators to lift said men and animals into seemingly random spots in the arena. These were intended to add an element of surprise and suspense into the games, and were added at a later date than the initial construction.

Underneath the entire building was an equally elaborate and extensive system of drains. Vespasian drained a lake to build the Colosseum on that spot, and the builders had to be careful that rain would not fill the lake bed and flood the amphitheatre. The drains therefore kept all water away from the Colosseum and funnelled it into the Cloaca Maxima, the great sewer of Rome. There are stories of the drains being reversed to flood the arena to allow for recreations of naval battles, but these may be myths.
