So many of the practices and medicines that help us stay alive now were not known or available then. Cleanliness and prevention of the spreading of germs, understanding of causes of tuberculosis, plague, cholera, child bed fever, surgical techniques and, most importantly, vaccines have had an amazing effect on people's longevity. Back in the day, 30 years was an average old age, infant mortality was high and people with disabilities were unlikely to survive.
