The tasks of the aediles were: the repair and preservation of temples, sewers and aqueducts; street cleansing and paving; traffic regulations, precautions against fire provisions regarding dangerous animals and dilapidated buildings;; supervision of baths and taverns; monitoring the quality of the goods on sale and the correctness of weights and measures; the purchase of grain for disposal at a low price in case of necessity. They enforced sumptuary laws, punished of gamblers and usurers and monitored public morals generally. They punished landowners who took too large a share of public land or kept too many cattle on state pastures. They also organised public games at their expense.
