The three stages of knighthood helped insure that only the finest could become knights. Starting as early as seven, children serve in the manor. They learn to serve, obey and learn various skills like hunting and riding houses. Becoming a teenager marks the beginning of the next stage; becoming a squire. They learn how to take care of their equipment, learn tactics for battle, and begin formal weapon training. This stage lasts until the squire can prove himself worthy for knighthood. After the accolade, the ceremony in which the squire is awarded knight status, the knight is now responsible for protecting his lord's land.

First, to be eligible to become a knight (in the time of King Arthur) a man must be born into noble blood, or prove himself worthy through a brave and challenging quest.

Next, he must ask the King and his advisers to become a knight.

If accepted, the King will dub him. To do this he will place your sword on each of your shoulders while the knight will recite the Code of Chivalry.

Next in the times of King Arthur you would take a seat at the Round Table or go off on a quest.

Generally, a boy would start training as a page for a few years. Then the page would graduate to become a squire, apprenticed to a knight. After the squire had been in service for a few years, he would be dubbed a knight.

I don't think there is a third stage of a knight, there are in becoming one though. Although if they finish their knighthood, they could be called "Sir"
