1920
Harding did not really want to run, but his friends and his wife wanted him to and he hated to refuse. Party bosses thought he would be a good candidate and run well. He was a US senator from Ohio and was nice looking .
NO - He could not for he died in office during his first term.
I don't think he was opposed to the idea but did not campaign for the job. He allowed his name to be placed in nomination for president at the convention in 1920 and later accepted the nomination as vice-presidential candidate. After he surprisingly became president, he agreed to run for another term. However, he did refuse to seek a third term.
The proposal of normalcy resulted to Three Trends which are: the Renewed Isolationism, Growth of Nativism, and the Political Conservatism. The normalcy proposal was in the 1920 presidential run of Warren Harding.
He was not noted for his scholarship or academic brilliance. However , with his wife's help, he was able to run a newspaper, serve in the US Senate and get elected President. He was probably better for sales than for research and development.
My nomination for this dubious distinction goes to Chester A. Arthur, who was not elected and could not get his party's nomination to run as the incumbent president. Others might choose William Henry Harrison who served for only one month or Warren Harding who did not complete his term and whose administration was tainted with scandals. I think the slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler too" keeps Harrison from being totally forgettable and Harding was too bad to be forgettable.
Harding's special car Pullman Car was called Alaskaland. It is presently on display at a park in Fairbanks. Alaska. It ran on the new Alaska Railroad for which Harding drove a golden spike to connect its two parts. The President and his wife also traveled in a special automobile that was fitted with wheels to run on a rail road. The last Alaska leg was made by automobile on a poor road. The trip from Alaska back to the the US was mde by boat. Harding died in San francisco.
Probably his biggest failing was his inability to stop corruption in his own administration. While there is little evidence that himself was corrupt, he could not say no to his friends, many of whom turned out to be dishonest and gave his presidency a bad name.
Woodrow Wilson ran against Roosevelt and Taft who were republicans
No, you must be at least 35 to run for president.
James M. Cox (March 31, 1870 - July 15, 1957), former governor of Ohio was Harding;s Democratic opponent in 1920. The Socialist Eugene Debs and others were on the ballots of some states but did not win any electoral votes. His main opponent was Democrat James M. Cox from Ohio.
Coolidge was the incumbent President due to the death of President Harding. That fact led to his running for President. He was nominated for vice-president due to his work in the national Republican party and his past as a capable governor of Massachusetts.
