It was started in 1792 by Irish architect James Hoban and finished in 1800. Constant renovations were made, especially after the building was set on fire in the War of 1812 by the British, but not burned down. Scorch marks can still be seen on the house today. Jefferson added colonnades on both sides of the building during his term as president. Truman added the second story balcony after it's renovation during his term (coincidentally named the Truman Balcony). Each president makes their own mark on the building.

The first cornerstone was laid for a "President's Palace" on Oct. 13, 1792. It was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban.

President George Washington oversaw the construction of the White House. Most of the labor was done by African American, both free and slaves.

I was completed in 1800 at a cost of $232,372. President John Adams moved in to the White House with his wife Abigail.

Construction of the White House began in 1792.

The cornerstone was laid October 13, 1792. John Adams and his wife Abigail moved into the unfinished house in 1800. Construction was ongoing until 1809, when Thomas Jefferson was the occupant. The White has been modified and reconstructed as time went by. The worst incident was the torching of the White House in 1813 by the British.

The construction of the White House continued for almost a decade. The executive residence was built in 1800 and the expansion of the building was finished in 1801 under the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. The Army of Great Britain burned some of the parts of the house in 1814. The reconstruction took place immediately and it was finished in 1948.
