During the invasion of Poland (September 1 - October 6, 1939), the Luftwaffe first attacked the city of Wieluń in south central Poland. The city was "carpet bombed", destroying 75% to 90% of the town, and killing more than 1200 of its 15,000 civilian residents.

The Luftwaffe also acted as airborne artillery. Planes such as the Stuka dive bomber went ahead of the Panzers, destroying targets that would impede the tanks' advance, as well as destroying the small Polish air force.

1. Militarized the Rhineland. 1a. Annexed Austria into Germany just prior to Austria taking a vote to do the same. 2. Germany did a massive military build up leading up to the invasion of Poland. Not a peaceful endeavor. 3. Forced France and England to betray Czechoslovakia to give up the Sudetenland area of their country that was primarily German ancestery. 4. Annexed the remainder of Czechoslovakia that finally prompted the British to promise to aid Poland if Germany attacks. 5. Germany demanded the return of the Danzig Corridor from Poland in order to reconnect Prussia to Germany. - The Poles rejected the demand and Germany invaded. Germany likely would have invaded anyway.
