When a Christian dies does he go to heaven or does he go to a holding place until judgment day?

In several places The Bible tells us that all await the Judgment of Christ, 'asleep' until that time:

We all are destined to die. The 'spirit' (not soul) in man returns to God, totally unaware of anything. It is returned to the Earth in a new body to face the above Judgment process:

6-7 Life, lovely while it lasts, is soon over.
Life as we know it, precious and beautiful, ends.
The body is put back in the same ground it came from.
The spirit returns to God, who first breathed it.
