I'm actually learning this in school right now (which is quite odd). They settled in this area gradually. As they soon as they learned basic farming (from the neolithic age) it influenced people to settle near the rivers (such as Mesopotamia). This then leads to more advanced people with lots of new forms of tech, social classes and etc.
